An officer from the Stamford Police Department who was working a traffic detail on the South End shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday, April 29, when he spotted smoke coming from a vacant building on the corner of Dock Street and Atlantic Street.
Crews from the Stamford Fire Department responded within minutes, and found that there was a vacant fire in a vacant wood frame garage on Manhattan Street.
According to officials, firefighters attacked the fire from the Dock Street side, while others approached from the Manhattan Street side, knocking down the flames in under a half hour.
Stamford Deputy Fire Chief Patrick Tripodi said that there were no occupants in the building at the time of the fire. The building suffered extensive fire and water damage, though it was contained to the vacant garage.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. There were no injuries reported. In total, 32 firefighters responded to the scene, clearing it before 1 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
Tripodi noted that “due to the diligence of the police officer on duty at the intersection, the fire was identified early in its incipient stage and the fire department responded without delay.”
